State Regulation Overview

Because insurance licensing operates at the state level, statutory requirements vary across multiple factors. These differences include mandatory study hours, ethics components, two or three year renewal cadences, and specific line endorsements. AgencyLedge tracks verified regulatory updates so your agency maintains active compliance across every jurisdiction.

How to check someone’s insurance license

  1. Use the state’s free lookup. Every state insurance department has a free online license search — by name, license number or NPN. Open the state above and follow its licensing-guide link, or use NIPR’s state lookup links ↗.
  2. Find the NPN. The National Producer Number is the same in every state. NIPR’s free NPN lookup ↗ finds it from an SSN, a license number or an agency’s FEIN.
  3. See every state at once. Individual producers can get one free NIPR producer report a year (licenses, appointments and regulatory actions) from NIPR’s verify existing licenses ↗ page.
  4. Read the record. Confirm the status is active, the line of authority covers what’s being sold, and the name and NPN match. Selling a carrier’s products also needs that carrier’s appointment.

Insurance licensing FAQ

Is it free to look up an insurance license?

Yes. Every state insurance department offers a free online license lookup. Individual producers can also get one free NIPR producer report per year covering all participating states.

What is an NPN?

The National Producer Number is a unique ID the NAIC assigns to every licensed individual and business entity during licensing. It stays the same across states, so it is the most reliable way to match a person or agency in different state records. NIPR’s NPN lookup finds it by Social Security number, license number or (for agencies) FEIN.

Can I check an agency, not just an agent?

Yes. Agencies that sell insurance hold their own business-entity license and NPN in most states. Search the state lookup by the agency’s legal name or license number.

Does an active license mean the agent can sell any insurance?

No. Check the lines of authority (for example property, casualty, life, accident & health) — an agent may only sell the lines listed. Selling a carrier’s policies usually also requires an appointment with that carrier, which is separate from the license.

How often do insurance licenses renew?

It depends on the state. Many renew every two years, some annually or on a date tied to the licensee’s birth month, and continuing education usually has to be completed before renewal. Each state guide on AgencyLedge lists that state’s cycle and CE hours — pick a state on the map above.

How can I keep track of my own licenses?

Use a tracker that reminds you before each renewal and CE deadline. AgencyLedge’s free license tracker reads your license documents, shows every state on a map and emails reminders before anything expires.
