How to Get a Texas Insurance License

Step 1 Complete Exam Preparation

Texas does not mandate a formal classroom prelicensing curriculum prior to taking the state exam but completing an exam prep course through recognized providers is strongly recommended. Study packages generally range between 150 dollars and 400 dollars depending on your chosen study format.

Step 2 Pass the State Licensing Exam

Texas insurance licensing examinations are administered through Pearson VUE. The examination tests national insurance principles alongside Texas specific insurance statutes and administrative regulations. A passing score of 70 percent or higher is required.

Step 3 Complete Fingerprinting and Submit Application

Following a passing examination score submit your official producer application online via Sircon or NIPR. The state licensing application fee is 50 dollars per line of authority. Resident applicants must also complete a state and FBI criminal background check with digital electronic fingerprinting through IdentoGO by IDEMIA using the official TDI service code.

Practical Tip for Expedited Processing

The Texas Department of Insurance typically approves complete electronic applications within three to seven business days once Pearson VUE exam scores and IdentoGO background clearances clear. Complete your digital fingerprinting session immediately after scheduling or passing your exam to prevent administrative delays.
