How to Get an Alabama Insurance Producer License

Securing an initial resident producer credential in Alabama requires passing state examinations, completing fingerprint clearances, and proving legal presence. Follow these sequential steps to ensure prompt application approval:

Step 1: Exam Preparation (Pre-Licensing)

Alabama repealed its mandatory pre-licensing course requirement effective January 1, 2024. While completion of a formal 20-hour or 40-hour pre-licensing course is no longer statutory, candidates are strongly advised to complete self-study courses through recognized providers to prepare for the rigorous state examination.

Step 2: Pass the University of Alabama State Examination

Licensing examinations in Alabama are administered by the University of Alabama across testing centers located in Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, and Tuscaloosa, as well as via authorized online proctoring.

  • Single Line Exam Fee: $50 (Life, Health, Property, Casualty, or Personal Lines).
  • Combined Line Exam Fee: $75 (Combined Life & Health or Combined Property & Casualty).
  • Passing Standard: A minimum score of 70% is required on each examination.
  • Retest Rules: After a second exam failure, candidates must wait 90 days before retesting. After four failures, candidates face a 180-day waiting period between subsequent attempts.

Step 3: Complete Digital Fingerprinting via Fieldprint

Resident applicants must submit digital fingerprints for federal and state background screening. Alabama works exclusively with Fieldprint for background processing. The standard fingerprint fee is $49.20. Schedule your session through Fieldprint immediately after passing your exam. ALDOI will not accept prints processed by unapproved vendors.

Step 4: Submit Online Application and Proof of Citizenship

Once examination and fingerprinting records are recorded, submit the resident individual producer application through NIPR.

  • Initial Application Fee: $80 state fee plus standard NIPR transaction fees.
  • Proof of Citizenship: Under the Beason-Hammon Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act, all applicants must submit proof of citizenship or lawful presence (such as a valid driver license or passport) through the ALDOI secure document upload portal within 10 days of filing. Applications without verification within 10 days are formally rejected without fee refunds.
