Oklahoma insurance licensing is administered by the Oklahoma Insurance Department. Pre-licensing courses, exams, and ongoing CE are typically handled through approved third-party providers, with applications and renewals processed online via Sircon and NIPR.
Oklahoma Insurance License Types
Oklahoma issues separate licenses by line of authority. The most common types for independent agents are:
| License Type | What It Covers |
|---|---|
| Property & Casualty | Personal & commercial P&C — auto, home, commercial, surety |
| Life | Life insurance and annuities |
| Accident & Health | Health, Medicare, dental, disability, vision |
| Personal Lines (Limited) | Auto and homeowners only — limited scope |
| Surplus Lines / Excess Lines | Non-admitted carriers for hard-to-place risk |
| Adjuster License | Claims adjusting (separate from agent license) |
How to Get a Oklahoma Insurance License
Step 1: Pre-Licensing Education
Most license types in Oklahoma require pre-licensing coursework before sitting for the exam. Approved providers include Kaplan, ExamFX, and AD Banker. Course costs typically range from $150-$400 depending on license type and study format.
Step 2: Pass the State Exam
Oklahoma insurance exams are administered by Prometric. Each exam covers state-specific insurance law and product knowledge for your chosen line of authority. Passing score is generally 70%.
Step 3: Submit Application & Submit Fingerprints
After passing the exam, complete your license application through Sircon.com or NIPR.com. Application fee: $45. You’ll also need fingerprinting through an approved vendor (typically $40-$95) and a background check, which is automatic with fingerprints.
