Oklahoma Insurance License Requirements
Complete 2026 guide covering OID exams, continuing education, and agency compliance.
Oklahoma Insurance License Types
The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) issues licenses based on specific lines of authority. Independent agents and producers must hold the correct line to solicit or bind coverage within the state.
| Line of Authority | Coverage Scope |
|---|---|
| Property & Casualty | Commercial and personal property, liability, auto, and surety. |
| Life | Life insurance coverage and annuity products. |
| Accident & Health | Health coverage, Medicare supplements, disability, and vision. |
| Personal Lines | Non commercial property and casualty limited to personal auto and homeowners. |
| Surplus Lines | Placement of hard to place risks with non admitted carriers (requires underlying P&C license). |
How to Get a Resident Oklahoma Insurance License
New resident producers must complete testing and background checks before applying for their license through the NIPR portal.
Step 1. Pre-Licensing Education and Exam
Oklahoma does not mandate a specific number of pre licensing education hours, but taking a dedicated prep course is highly recommended. You must pass the state exam administered by Prometric. Exams are tailored to your chosen line of authority and require a passing score of 70 percent.
Step 2. Fingerprinting and Background Check
All resident applicants must undergo a criminal history background check. You must schedule and complete your fingerprinting through IdentoGO or Prometric test centers. The OID uses these fingerprints to process state and federal background checks.
Step 3. Submit Your Application
Once your exam and fingerprints are processed, submit your formal application online via NIPR. The standard resident producer application fee is $60, plus applicable NIPR transaction fees.
Applications are typically reviewed within 5 to 10 business days after the OID receives your background check results from the OSBI.
Renewal and Continuing Education (CE)
Oklahoma insurance licenses expire every two years on the last day of the producer’s birth month. Maintaining active status requires completing continuing education before the expiration date.
Continuing Education Requirements
- Total Hours: 24 hours of approved CE per biennial cycle.
- Specific Subjects: Must include exactly 3 hours of ethics and 2 hours of legislative updates.
- Course Type: CE credits must be relevant to the lines of authority held by the producer.
License Renewal Process
Producers should submit their renewal application and the $60 renewal fee through NIPR or Sircon once all CE requirements are posted to their state transcript. Late renewals are subject to additional penalty fees and possible suspension of authority.
Oklahoma Business Entity Licensing
Agencies operating as a corporation, LLC, or partnership must hold a separate Oklahoma Business Entity license. The agency must designate at least one licensed individual producer to serve as the Designated Responsible Licensed Producer (DRLP). The DRLP ensures the agency complies with all state insurance laws and regulations. The application fee for a business entity license is $60.
